NCAA Regional Results: Carter and Seward Qualify for Nationals
At the NCAA Regional Meet hosted by Muhlenberg and run at Lehigh's home course, the Grove City College cross country teams ended their seasons in fine fashion, the women tying for sixth place and the men finishing ninth. Each of the women's teams finishing ahead of GCC will be heading to the nationals. There were 37 full womens teams (and eight other partial teams) and forty-one full mens teams (plus two partial teams). Congratulations to Coach Sean Severson (updated biography) and the teams!
Both junior Kristen Carter (Bellingham, WA/Bellingham) and junior Julia Seward (Elizabethton, TN/Science Hill) qualified for the National Meet next week by finishing fifth and twelfth, respectively.
The top two teams in the region automatically qualified for the nationals, and the regional rankings for the top two in each division correctly predicted the finish of the women's teams of Dickinson and Haverford, and the men's teams of Haverford and Allegheny. Our congratulations to these teams and their fine coaches, Don Nichter (Dickinson); Fran Rizzo (Haverford) and Bill Ross (Allegheny). Links to the biographies of these coaches will be found in the preview to this meet: Click here
In addition to the automatic qualifiers, teams named from our region to the National meet are: Johns Hopkins, Elizabethtown and Allegheny (women) and Carnegie Mellon and Dickinson (men). Do well in the Nationals!

Womens Preview for Regionals with Disclamers
Analysis: Dickinson is a clear and heavy favorite. Another great year for Coach Don Nichter's squad. There are two automatic qualifiers for the region, and it would appear as if four teams have a legitimate shot at second on a good day (Haverford, Johns Hopkins, Grove City and Allegheny).

ANALYSIS OF PAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
For the Grove City women, this was their 19th consecutive PAC Championship. The men have won 17 consecutive titles.
Womens Race:
Winning the race today, for her fourth consecutive win was junior Kristen Carter, who ran 22:52 for the 6k course. Carter was named MVP for the second consecutive season. Also named First Team All-PAC were Julia Seward, a junior who is having a very fine season, who was second today in 23:05; freshman Emily Pierce, fourth in 24:10; freshman Brigitte Fryan, fifth in 24:16; and freshman Jessica Vernon, seventh in 24:39. Second Team All-PAC honors went to sophomore Rachel Nelson, eighth overall in 24:47; and senior Sarah Sharp tenth in 24:49. Since the top fourteen qualify for all-PAC honors, more GCC runners would have been so-named but for a maximum of seven runners who can score and take honors. Amanda Hewitt was twelfth in 25:06 and Rachael Smith was fourteenth in 25:19.
Mens Race:
In the mens race, freshman Garrett Cichowitz finished third in 27:29 and was named First Team All-PAC. Joining Cichowitz of the First team were freshman Gordon Grob, fourth in 27:48, junior Daniel Spaulding (last year’s MVP coming back from a mid-season injury with a fine run), fifth in 27:52; junior Timothy Su, sixth in 28:00; and junior Brett Kelly, seventh in 28:09. Second Team honors wenr to seniorJoey Cortez, eighth in 28:17 and sophomore Zach Foster ninth in 28:21. As with the women, two others would have made all-league honors but for the limit of runners from a team. Thus, Jeremiah Patterson was tenth in 28:28; Frankie Hourigan was eleventh in 28:39; Cordell Oberholtzer was thirteenth in 29:08; and Joshua Lauer was fourteenth in 29:10. Overall, six of the top eight and nine of the top fourteen were Wolverines. After the race, Garrett Cichowitz stated that: “The greatest motivation in a race is beyond what one can have when looking inward, but rather comes from focusing on one’s surroundings: fans, teammates, and most importantly God. I would not have survived the race without the latter.”

PAC Conference Championships Preview
This Saturday, the Presidents Athletic Conference championship meet will be held at St. Vincent's College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. It should be noted that St. Vincent's and Geneva are not eligible for the team race (although as last year, the teams will run but not count in the team scoring) this year as they transition from scholarship programs to NCAA division III. The preview will thus not include either the teams or individuals from those schools. Joe Onderko, Executive Director of the Presidents Athletic Conference, has explained on the PAC website (click here) that St. Vincent's and Geneva runners will compete for PAC Coaches Honors by placing in the top 14.
Team Races:
The Womens' team race last year was the closest in recent memory as Grove City, with 32 points, held off Waynesburg with 35. Waynesburg returns their entire top-5 team from last year and will be looking to stop Grove City's 18 years of consecutive wins. While Grove City will only bring three of their top ten finishers from a year ago to the starting line, the young Wolverine squad (four freshmen have played significant roles this year) has had a remarkable season and is ranked fourth in the NCAA Mideast regional poll, and must be considered the favorite once again.
In the Mens' race, the top three from a year ago were Grove City (19)(winning its 16th consecutive title), Waynesburg (58) and Washington & Jefferson (69). Grove City is currently ranked ninth in the NCAA Mideast region, and comes in as the clear race favorite. W&J would appear to have the edge for second based on year-to-date results.
Individual Races:
In the Womens' race, the heavy favorite is defending champion Kristen Carter of Grove City, who has been named PAC Runner of the Week each week she has competed this year. In addition, she has been named the ECAC cross country Athlete of the Week twice this season. She appears to be running even better than Elisa Pedersen did in her All-American year of 2005. Other runners contending for All-Conference honors should include returning first team all-PAC runners from last year from Waynesburg, Michelle Probst Cross, Megan Grover, Janet Carson and Katie Weko, and second team all-PAC Haley Hinds; as well as Erin Long of Washington & Jefferson (3rd overall last year); Elizabeth Beardsley of Westminster; and Grove City harriers Julia Seward, Jessica Vernon, Emily Pierce, Brigitte Fryan, Amanda Hewitt, Rachael Smith, Laura Koller, Sarah Sharp and Rachel Nelson.
In the Mens' race, both the 2005 MVP, Matt Rudzki of Washington & Jefferson, and the 2006 MVP, Dan Spaulding of Grove City return. In addition, other runners contending for the top spot should be Garrett Cichowitz of Grove City, twice PAC Runner of the Week this season, Bobby Regan of W&J, and Zach Foster of Bethany. Grove City has several other runners who will be competing for all-Conference honors, including Joey Cortez, Gordon Grob, Frankie Hourigan, Brett Kelly, Cordell Oberholtzer and Tim Su

10/13/2007 Gettysburg Invitational Summary
As for the men, in our region GCC is ranked 8th. While they beat 4th ranked Dickinson and 5th ranked Johns Hopkins today. it is noted that several of Dickinson's top runners did not compete today, and this apparently was Hopkins' B-team, as the A-team competed on the west coast. GCC also beat ninth ranked Gettysburg today, which was running their full team.

Coach Sean Severson
Sean Severson is in his fourth season as head men's and women's cross country coach at Grove City College.
In all four of the years of his tenure, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007, Severson has guided both Grove City cross country squads to Presidents' Athletic Conference championships. Severson earned the PAC Men's Coach of the Year award in 2004. In 2007, he was named PAC Men’s Coach of the Year and PAC Women’s Coach of the year.
Severson has coached two athletes to All American status: Elisa Pedersen in 2005 and Kristin Carter in 2007. In his four years as head coach, All-Conference first team accolades have been achieved 21 times by men and 15 times by women. Seven men and 14 women have been named second team all-conference during those years. In those three years, Severson has coached five all regional and national qualifiers (Elisa Pedersen 2004, 2005) Kristen Carter (2006, 2007), and Julia Seward (2007).
Severson joined the Grove City staff in May 2004 after spending two years as a graduate assistant at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado. He earned his master's degree in health, physical education and recreation from Adams State in 2004.
At Adams State, Severson worked with the men's basketball team and as a graduate assistant athletic trainer. He was involved with the supervision of student-athlete progress, film exchange, recruiting and scouting, along with other duties pertaining to the basketball program.
A native of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsinn, Severson earned a bachelor of arts degree in athletic training from the University of Minnesota-Morris in May 2002. At Minnesota-Morris, Severson captained the basketball team and earned Academic All-Conference honors from the Northern Sun Conference three times. He also earned Dean's List distinction at Minnesota-Morris.
Severson is also the assistant men's basketball coach at Grove City, and instructor of physical education. Severson lives in Grove City with wife Tara and three daughters, Selah, Cana and Meah.
Thanks for much of the background material to Ryan Briggs, the Sports Information Director of Grove City College.
